City Museum of Novi Sad is a museum of complex type dedicated to collecting, preservation, presentation and interpretation of multilayer and multinational cultural heritage of the area of Novi Sad and the areas that gravitate to it.
Respecting the principles modern museological practice and following modern scientific tendencies, experts of the City Museum of Novi Sad have been creating safe conditions for protection of cultural artefacts, whose presentation, as a kind of media, enable an objective interpretation of the facts.

In accordance with its social responsibility the City Museum of Novi Sad creates and realizes its programs with the intention to allow widest audience to perceive the segments of the cultural and historical heritage and to create individual knowledge about it.
Following this approach, the City Museum of Novi Sad becomes the meeting point of different ideas, a place of intercultural dialogue and the most diverse cultural experiences.
For more than 50 years of existence the City Museum of Novi Sad has collected and conserved over 60 thousand items that represent material evidences of the life of its earliest inhabitants, the turbulent historical events, the economic and social development of the city, the culture of habitation, the aesthetic principles and artistic expressions of the population of Novi Sad .
Part of the items from the rich museum collection is presented to public within permanent exibitions in the main building and annexes, as well as through the organization of thematic exhibitions. Besides exhibition activities, the Museum organizes other types of events, such as festival of documentary and scientific films, book promotions, creative workshops for the youngest citizens, etc., with the aim of enriching the cultural offer of the City of Novi Sad.

The glass carafe

Description:
The glass carafe with silver shackles represents a very decorative utensil from the epoch of historicism. It was created in one of the best Parisian workshops, during the second half of the 19th century. A few of these carafe has been purchased by the opera singer Melanija Bugarinović, whose home in Belgrade Dedinje was abound in similar objects.

A bell shaped silver goblet, originated from around 1900 in the workshop of Antipas Ivanov Kuzmic, Moscow jeweler. Cleated and gilded inside, this goblet is decorated with narrow ranges, typical of the style of late historicism, and partly secession.

On this picture, opera singer Melanija Bugarinović is presented in costume and pose from Bizet's opera "Carmen", which she often interpreted. Made in 1943 on the basis of a photography, painted by Pomorišac Vasa, the famous Serbian interwar painter, one of the founders of "Zograf" who advocated for the traditional basis of national art.

The painting was done in 1932 Voja Trifunovic, one of the leading painters of inter- war Novi Sad. Shows the Novi Sad trader Mirko Erdeh, who died in the concentration camp Auschwitz during the Second World War. The work is done in the style of academic realism, with the intent to remain in the family legacy.

Desk mirror of the Czech production is due in Novi Sad City Museum as part of the legacy of Professor Desanka Kostic. It is designed in the style of historicism in the late 19th century and made of colorless cut glass, in some parts dyed with distinctive shade of blue. Such mirrors were used mostly by women.

A small writing desk is manufactured in Japan in the late 19th century as a subject for export to Europe. Carved wooden surface is divided into a series of small drawers and hidden space where the stationery was placed. The box belonged to Novi Sad professor Desanka Kostic.

Thanks to the trade routes of Novi Sad and the transit center position, in Novi Sad interiors in the late 19th century appear and objects from Asia. In addition to carpets, such pieces as the hookah were brought. This hookah was the work of Constantinople in the 18th century, bought as a souvenir.
In the Novi Sad environment this subject has had practical but more decorative role.

In the Museum's collection of applied art, there is a collection of carpets, produced in various European and Asian workshops during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Carpet of smaller dimensions, had the prayerful role. Made in Skopje or Sarajevo carpet weaving mill in the third decade of the 20th century. Its interesting ornamentation copied Asia Minor models.
